EVENT CASE STUDY
Name of Project/Brand/Event
Lost Evenings Festival

WHAT is the project - activities, genre, artform
This is a festival organised by Frank Turner, a UK singer songwriter, who puts on a festival every year in a different location. It started at the Roundhouse in London, 2016 and has grown to be a certainty on the calendar of his fans every year.
WHY I chose this as an example
I choose this example because it's a festival organised by people who don’t do it as their careers. It is organised by Turners touring crew who are great at their jobs but had to learn how to organise and conduct a festival themselves. They had to draw on their skills as a touring crew and implement them in a festival setting.
WHAT do you think the brand essence is? And how does this communicate through the branding?
The brand essence is based around there title of the festival ‘lost evenings’ which is a lyric to an early Turner song and resonates with many fans - some of which even have it tattooed on them. They also do a charity open mic event every year which encourages fellow musicians to even be a part of the festival. this draws on the idea off community and allows his fans to become a part of the festival.
WHAT is the purpose of the project/event?
The propose of the project is to connect Frank Turner fans with other bands and musicians like him. For example Turner chooses the lineup which is finished by himself every night and lasts 3 days. So fans get to experience three nights of music similar to Turner and also Turner himself.
WHO is the audience?
Frank Turner Fans
HOW was it produced – timescale/process/logistics
Happens every year in a different location
2024 - Germany
2025 - Scotland
2026 - Texas
Takes a year to book the venue and artists and is always announced at the finale of the current years festival.
WHAT I can learn from this – either in terms of technique / method or process/ways of working.
I learnt that everybody is vital when you’re all at the same point of inexperience. You draw on everybody’s strengths and ideas. Nobody can solely organise such an event so everybody must play their parts.
ARTIST CASE STUDY
Name of Artist
The Lottery Winners

https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=lottery+winners&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
WHAT is the artist’s genre and why did I choose them?
The Lottery Winners are an indie pop band from Manchester and I chose them because I saw them play a show in Oxford last night (14.11.2025).
HOW does this artist connect to my own practice?
This artists connects to my own practice as they are a huge inspiration on my music. More so lyrically as I write from similar personal perspectives on topics such as love, heartbreak and mental health. They also align with my genre taste and preference.
WHAT is the artist’s brand essence and how does this reflect through the image/branding?
Their brand image is through the use of bright colours and their logo consists of a sunflower. Their merch is consistent with this and it is the backdrop of their live shows on stage. They also have football shirt designs.
WHAT can I learn from this artist, musically?
Musically I learnt that while success can take a long time, you can still be in a band and create music regardless. They have had 2 back to back number one UK albums in the last three years but they have been a band for 20 years. this is a considerably long time given how recent their success has come during that period of time.
WHAT could I change about my own performance/brand identity based on this artist?
Consistency is really noticeable with the lottery winners. They are consistent with their image and it has inspired me to pick a theme with my bands new EP and to really stick with it and keep it consistent. For example on our social posts we are using the egg timer as a way of counting down to our return to making music.
WHAT are the artist’s key strengths? What would I improve?
The artists key strengths are their individual personalities which form a solid group combination. The lead signer is comedic like and he uses that to his advantage to manipulate a crowd to participate by singing along and dancing. They have a female guitar player who is amazing in what would be considered stereotypically a ‘boys band’. All of this results in a solid group of musicians. In terms of music I would improve their ability to play more songs during their live set. They spend a fair amount of time between songs talking when they could easily squeeze at least 5 more songs in what is a 1 hour 30 minute stage time setlist.
Reflection
"One thing that’s really important to me is maintaining and expanding the community aspect of it. We’ve got lots of plans for stuff happening around Camden, charity and activism plans to come into the festival."
Turner, F. NME. 2018
This quote by Frank Turner on his festival is somethingI find very interesting when considering the power you have when you have a stage and audience. When bringing like minded people together you can make a difference to a community. Turner always has representatives from charities at the festival from Mind, Trans rights and women's rights organisations. He says " We’re doing quite a lot of outreach with the Roundhouse and programmes that they do for local, low income families." This suggests he understands the importance of also helping his local fans and the wider community which is something we have the power to do especially considering our venue is also a youth centre. We also have the ability to help people even if that's getting them involved or inviting them to the show for the experience. Especially younger people given were in their youth centre. Overall it highlights the importance of the community you are in and the different community Turners event is in every year.
The Youth Centre members could form a part of the show if we give them lessons on how to play instruments. They could even choose the songs for the playlist that will be played given its a collective space we are all a part of. They could gain experience at stage management and how running an event works. Overall the idea of community could be enhanced when delivering the event and every idea to get the community involved must be considered and explored.
